Oak Creek Lionsfest Just Around the Corner

posted Aug 28, 2011, 5:10 PM by Oak Creek Lions
One of the city's biggest events of the year is almost here.

You've probably the seen the signs around town for the 52nd-annual Oak Creek Lionsfest, which will be held Sept. 2 through Sept. 5 at American Legion Park, 9327 S. Shepard Ave., and features great performers and activities for all ages.

Though the event lasts only four days out of the year, the Oak Creek Lions Club spends a lot more time bringing the festival to life.

"The organizing of the festival never ends," Lions President Nancy Finch said. "Once the festival has ended for the current year, we begin planning for next year. We spend countless hours planning and organizing to make the event the best it can be."

So what are the fruits of their labors? This year, more than 20 bands are playing on indoor and outdoor stages, including favorites like The Britins and The Toys. Local funnyman Pat McCurdy will also make an appearance at 2 p.m. Monday.

All of your favorite festival rides will be there again, along with raffles, a car show and the much-loved Polka Mass.

Finch promises much more in the way of family-friendly events this year, including an arts-and-craft show and a special children's area - free of charge.

"We want the community to know that 'family comes first,'" Finch said.

Known for their charitable pursuits, the Oak Creek Lions will put the proceeds from the festival to good use. With money raised at the event, the club is able to assist with many deserving community projects and families needing help in tough times.

The festival grounds are open to the public starting at 3 p.m. Friday. Discounted carnival ride tickets can be purchased at the Legion, Ace HardwareButcher Block, Gary’s Beer & Liquor, North Shore Bank, the Oak Creek Community CenterWalgreens and M&I Bank.
